summer pregnancyTo Swim or Not to Swim?

You arrive at your beautiful summer beach vacation at last. It's boiling hot and the ocean and poolside are calling out to you. You put one foot in and then you stop and think, "Is it okay to swim while pregnant?" Read this article before going away on your summer vacation.

Swimming while Pregnant

As with all the rules of pregnancy, you should consult with your obstetrician or mid-wife before going for a dip. However, in most cases, swimming is considered a safe activity for pregnant women to enjoy. Bacteria and chemicals from the pool, lakes or ocean, is not known to cause any harm to your fetus. It is also a great way to stay cool and exercise during the heat of summer.

Things to remember while swimming pregnant

Although, your baby is safe while you are in the water, you should never swim too far, where the water is over your head. Pregnant women tire more easily, and even though you could normally swim a certain distance, doesn't mean you can still do that distance now that you're pregnant. Enjoy the water, but do so safely.

What about Hot Tubs during pregnancy?

It is always recommended to avoid submerging in hot water during pregnancy. During the summer, this probably won't be a problem for you at all, however, if the oppurtunity arrises, please avoid it. A body temperature above 101 degrees F. is thought to cause an increased risk in birth defects, especially during the first trimester. If you can lower the temperature on a hot tub to 95 degrees F or lower, you may be okay, but still check with your OB first.
