Are the Girl’s taking over the Boy’s names?

Will there be nothing but John’s and Robert’s running around soon?

In the age of “unique” baby names, it seems as though the boys are being left out in the cold.  Back in the turn of the century, think “Gone with the Wind” you would hear the name Ashley and immediately associate it with a male gender.  Since that time we’ve seen Ashley rise to the top 10 of the most popular baby names but not for boys!  In 1992 the name Ashley reached #1 for girls and has not made it out of the top 10 since then.

Girls Names that used to be Boys Names

There are many other boy names, which girls have dominated over the years.  Some of these include;

  • Ashley     * Shannon * Avery   * Jordan
  • Tony       * Taylor     * Colby   * Ryan
  • Dylan      * Cody       * Robin   * Kim
  • Riley       * Kelly       * Bailey   * Skyler
  • Rory        * Reece      * Kyle     * Morgan
  • Devon      * Hayden   * Peyton  * Hunter
  • Kennedy  * Ashton    * Dani      * Joey

These are just to name a few.  Mother’s of boys seem to be truly upset by this when they’ve got a son already named one of these now popular girl names.

Are there any good boy names left?

There are still several nice boy names out there; most are more traditional names such as, your Christopher and Jacob’s.  There are several boy names which have came out over the years such as, Hunter, which in naming your son this you would never have thought that it would turn into a girls name but trends are showing it is becoming another “Jordan”.

Here is a list of less traditional Boy names, which are still mostly boy names

  • Cole
  • Carter
  • Wyatt
  • Ian
  • Aidan
  • Noah

But aren’t Boy names for Girls a cute idea?

I seen the cutest little girl named Colby the other day and the name suited her to a T.  So why not name a girl a boy name if that’s what you like?  This is a debate which mother’s constantly are having.  It is usually about 50/50.  The mother’s with sons don’t like it, but the mother’s looking for unique girl names do like it.  Of course the choice is down to the parents of the baby not other parents frustrations.

But what if I have a baby boy one day and am only left a handful of masculine choices in naming him?

With naming trends constantly changing every 10 years or so, we really shouldn’t worry about this too much.  For example we saw a definite spike in the name Jordan in the 90’s but for the past couple of years it has definitely decreased, which will eventually revert back to a boy’s name over time.  We can’t control what others name their babies so it’s best to name your son what you like and not worry too much about it.
